Anomalous scattering rates and possible spin liquid phase in the cobaltate NaxCoO2

Transport, thermodynamic and spectroscopic evidence for anomalous electronic states in the cobaltate NaxCoO2 are reviewed. This compound consists of triangular layers of Co sites that can be doped by Na stoichiometry. Ordering processes on the Na sites affect the electronic state of Co. Evidence for non-Fermi liquid like scattering rates have been found as an electronic Raman scattering continuum with a typical energy scale of 550cm-1. We discuss the relation of these effects with the recently conjectured spin liquid phase in NaxCoO2.
