Role of tuning parameter at the quantum phase transition of heavy-fermion-systems

Recent experiments elucidating the different behavior of field tuning vs. composition tuning of the quantum critical point in CeCu6-xAux will be reviewed. These experiments suggest that the (B,x) phase diagram for T → 0 may exhibit several magnetically ordered phases -. Uniaxial stress imposed on an expitaxially grown LaCoO3 film leads to the stabilization of a high-spin state for T → 0, as opposed to the low-spin state of bulk LaCoO3. Unexpectedly, this leads to ferromagnetism in epitaxial films whose properties can be "strain-tuned" by choosing different substrates.
