Use of breeding to find the physical causes of instabilities

In breeding, the model equations are satisfied exactly by both the unperturbed and the perturbed integrations. This allows the derivation of exact energy equations for the bred vectors, without the need of time or space averages. As a result it is possible to compute exactly the mechanisms involved in instabilities since they generate growing bred vectors, and their growth can be diagnosed from the energy equation.
