| I discuss fundamental theoretical issues pertaining the multiple ionization of atoms under radiation of intensity and frequency available at FLASH. The theory is applied to the interpretation of exprerimental results in the rare gases, and issues such as sequential and direct processes, as well as the possible role of giant resonances are discussed. Extrapolation to much shorter wavelengths is also considered. |
